Overview and aims
The extent, pace, and often the scale of changes with which businesses have to cope, have grown significantly over recent years. Anticipating and responding to change with appropriate initiatives is a major challenge of modern management.
The Strategic Change Management module is unique on the programme as it is designed to be delivered via a workplace simulation giving students explicit coverage of the ability to respond to and manage change.
During the simulation, students will have to work in a team to make a variety of business decisions to ensure their business meets its KPIs and is as profitable as possible across the weeks of the simulation.
The simulation enables participants to both understand the critical processes and success factors required within organisations to ensure change is implemented successfully and the opportunity to apply this in real situations through a team-based consultancy project or an online simulation.
The module develops the theory learned in core modules, and the theoretical content of the module focuses on the nature of organisational change and its implementation. It also provides an opportunity for students to take an integrated approach to disciplines covered elsewhere on the programme while they investigate a real life organisational problem.
In so doing, students will work in teams and focus on a well-defined organisational and managerial problem. They will identify, analyse, and evaluate options and make appropriate recommendations for change, including a suitable change management strategy.

- Change, project management and consultancy skills
- The external and internal triggers for change
- The scope and nature of organisational change
- Reasons for resistance to change and how this can be overcome
- The role of organisational culture in change management
- Organisational politics and change
- Change management strategies
- Managing information and data and the communication of change
- The role of change agents
After studying this module you should be able to:
- critically evaluate the scope and nature of organisational change in different settings and the role of different disciplines in achieving change
- critically evaluate different models and concepts of change and interpret and apply change theory in an organisational context
- interpret and evaluate factors causing resistance to change and plan and employ strategies to deal effectively with them
- apply approaches to the leadership and implementation of strategic change, including (but not limited to) a critical evaluation of the use of politics and tactics
- demonstrate critical awareness of the impact of ethical and sustainable practices on the discipline
- appraise different consultancy approaches and processes and discuss the various roles consultants and other change agents play in the management of change
- synthesise knowledge and concepts from a multi-disciplinary, theoretical perspective to enable a critical approach to the consultancy project including understanding and practising a range of techniques for gathering, interpreting and disseminating data and information
- analyse and synthesise information to solve an organisational or managerial issue identified by the client and to find innovative, creative, practical solutions of benefit to present to the company, including an implementation strategy
