Global Business Simulation

Overview and aims

The Global Business Simulation is an immersive, intensive and investigative experience in which you will work with a team of classmates/colleagues to run your own business, in competition with other teams, over several weeks. The majority of your activity for this element of your course will occur in the simulation itself.

The simulation is an online business simulation that takes an applied, action-learning approach. In this simulation, you will make decisions and will then able to follow the implications of the decisions and reflect on the impact of the decisions for your business.

In this simulation, you will run a complex business over a period of time and, working in a team to make decisions concerning market penetration, resource allocation, employee utilisation, operations management, managing change, and engaging employees. The simulation aims to:

  • Enable you to apply the theory learned in core modules.
  • Enable you to analyse the decisions you make and the reflections of your group on the impact, effectiveness and the successes of your chosen strategy and resource allocation.
  • Provide an opportunity for you to take an integrated approach by applying the concepts and frameworks from disciplines covered elsewhere on the programme while you investigate a range of organisational problems in a competitive setting.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding. After studying this module, you should be able to: Critically evaluate the scope and nature of organisational change in different settings and the role of different disciplines in achieving change.

Critically evaluate different models and concepts of change and interpret and apply change theory in an organisational context.

Interpret and evaluate factors causing resistance to change and plan and employ strategies to deal effectively with them.

Apply approaches to the leadership and implementation of strategic change, including (but not limited to) a critical evaluation of the use of politics and tactics.

Demonstrate critical awareness of the impact of ethical and sustainable practices on the discipline.

Appraise different consultancy approaches and processes and discuss the various roles consultants and other change agents play in the management of change.

Synthesise knowledge and concepts from a multi-disciplinary, theoretical perspective to enable a critical approach to the consultancy project including understanding and practising a range of techniques for gathering, interpreting and disseminating data and information.

Analyse and synthesise information to solve an organizational or managerial issue identified by the client and to find innovative, creative, practical solutions of benefit to present to the company, including an implementation strategy.

Skills, qualities and attributes. After studying this module, you should be able to:

  • Evidence competence in critical analysis when assessing organisational problems.
  • Act more effectively as an agent for change.
  • Work collaboratively with others in a consultancy team, adhering to the specific terms of reference for the project.
  • Solve complex problems and make decisions, establishing criteria and evaluating options.
  • Communicate effectively and sustain supported arguments with fluency and coherence in the written report and the presentation.
